Slide 11 Since the diagram on our topographic map told us that our compass will point about 5 degrees to the East of a North - South grid line, we're going to set the dial on our compass to 5 degrees West, or 355 degrees.

The next steps must be done on a table that has no metal that could disturb your compass.

Take a good look at the wooden table you're going to use. Crawl under it and look for metal brackets under the wood.

Slowly move your compass over the surface you'll be using. Watch the needle carefully. It should always point in the same direction. If it always shifts a few degrees over a spot on the table, the table has metal that's affecting the compass and must not be used.
