Slide 4 The best maps for your canoe trip into Woodland Caribou Park are maps you make yourself.

You can copy sections of your topographic maps, much like the American Automobile Association does with it's "Trip Tik" program. Be sure to transfer the Grid Line numbers to your new copy, as well as the Map Number. You can then transfer the portage markings from your Park Map and add Magnetic Bearings so that you'll always know where to point your canoe when you reach a portage landing or a point of land.

Let's look a little closer at these Transverse Mercator maps so we understand some of the markings on them. Then we'll learn how to plot our course - the fun part of planning your next canoe trip.
