Slide 5 The TRANSVERSE Mercator projection used for Canadian Topographical maps is oriented to the north pole, rather than the equator. There's less distortion for northern lands with this projection.

Notice that the Parallels - the lines that will form the top and bottom of our flat paper map - notice that they're curved. The Meridians - the lines that will define the right and left sides of our maps - they're curved too.

Take a look at the Grid - the dotted lines. The Grid starts at the equator and extends to the north pole.

The Grid is one of the most useful tools on our topo maps.
