We
arrived at the Beresford Lake boat ramp in
Manitobas Nopiming Provincial Park a little
after noon. On the way up I had picked up the $20
Manitoba Parks parking permit at a store that
sold licenses. Weeks before I had ordered my
Woodland Caribou permits for the days that we
would be in the Ontario Park from their office at
Red Lake. Manitoba does not require back country
camping permits in its parks. All the gear was quickly
gone over and loaded into the three canoes. We
would be camping on the Eastern end of Garner
Lake tonight. There would be 10 miles of paddling
but no portages so things did not have to be in
perfect order. Our trip was starting with
wonderful weather. A pleasant tailwind pushed us
on our way. Our turn upstream into the Garner
River from the Beresford Creek was very evident
about a mile and a half after leaving the boat
ramp. A few motor boats passed as we meandered up
the river. It is a 20 to 40 foot wide channel
with grass on the edges but a deep channel in the
middle. As we neared the lake I noted a rock
shelf on the North bank that would have made a
possible camp in case the winds kept us off the
lake.
